The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain and thunderstorm alerts for several parts of Maharashtra, with the heaviest rainfall expected in the Vidarbha region. Mumbai is under a green alert; the city is likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers. No school holiday has been announced in Mumbai, and schools will remain open.
Maharashtra Under Yellow & Orange Alerts
Thane and Palghar have been placed under a yellow alert. These districts may experience thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places. Schools in both Thane and Palghar are also expected to function as usual.
Nagpur is under an orange alert due to the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. As a precaution, the district administration has ordered the closure of all government and private schools, colleges, anganwadis and coaching centres across Nagpur city and district on Wednesday, July 29.
The decision follows extremely heavy rainfall that disrupted normal life in Nagpur on Tuesday. One weather station recorded 104.5 mm of rain in just three hours, while the total rainfall for the day reached around 180 mm. Roads, junctions and low-lying areas were flooded, causing major traffic jams and making travel difficult for commuters. Several important roads have turned into rivers due to waterlogging.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation said emergency teams rescued 461 people from flooded areas. Municipal workers were deployed to clear blocked drains and remove water from affected locations. Authorities also advised people to avoid travelling through waterlogged areas unless necessary. The heavy rain has once again raised concerns about Nagpur's drainage system, as several underpasses and major roads were submerged.
Meanwhile, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Gondia are under a red alert, with the IMD warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Residents have been urged to follow weather updates and official safety advisories.
