Maharashtra Introduces New Electric Buses for Ajanta Caves Tourists; How to Book

The Ajanta Caves located near Ajanta village in Maharashtra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are among India's top tourist attractions. These ancient Buddhist rock-cut temples and monasteries draw history lovers from all over the world. This new service is expected to provide a better travel experience while helping to protect the environment.

Electric Bus Service Launched on World Tourism Day

The first electric bus was launched on September 27, 2024, to mark World Tourism Day. The aim is to offer a comfortable, hassle-free, and eco-friendly mode of transportation for tourists visiting the Ajanta Caves. The buses will shuttle passengers between the parking lot and the cave complex, making it easier and faster for visitors to access the site.

Bus Features

The fleet of electric buses offers both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned options, allowing tourists to choose based on their preferences. Each bus has a seating capacity ranging from 14 to 22 passengers. To ensure tourists do not have to wait long, the service is designed to operate every two minutes, minimizing waiting times.

During the bus ride, an onboard film about the history and significance of the Ajanta Caves will be shown. This is aimed at educating and entertaining visitors, enhancing their overall experience. Additionally, the Maharashtra Tourism Department is developing a tourist-friendly booking system to make the process even more efficient and convenient.

Environmental and Employment Benefits

By replacing the old diesel buses, the new electric buses will significantly reduce pollution in the area, contributing to a cleaner environment. This initiative aligns with the goal of promoting sustainable tourism while preserving the natural beauty and historical value of the Ajanta Caves.

The new service will also provide employment opportunities for locals. Thirty-two people will be employed to manage and operate the bus service, contributing to local job creation.

Tourists will soon have various options to book their bus tickets:

1. On-Site Booking: Tickets can be purchased directly at the parking lot where the buses operate. This is a convenient option for visitors who prefer buying tickets in person.

2. Tourist Information Centers: Tickets may also be available at local tourist information centers or kiosks near the Ajanta Caves.

3. Online Booking: Once the online booking system is operational, visitors will be able to book tickets via the Maharashtra Tourism Department's official website or a dedicated app.

Enhancing the Visitor Experience

The introduction of the electric bus service at the Ajanta Caves marks a significant step towards improving the overall experience for tourists. Not only does it make transportation more efficient, but it also helps preserve the site's natural surroundings. Visitors can now look forward to a cleaner, more comfortable, and informative visit to one of India's most iconic historical sites.

This new service is a major development for both Maharashtra's tourism and the Ajanta Caves, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy this ancient wonder while protecting the environment.
