Madhya Pradesh's Sankalp Campaign to Make 50 Tourist Destinations Women-Friendly

Madhya Pradesh launches campaign to train women for tourism jobs and make destinations safer

Madhya Pradesh, a state renowned for its rich cultural and natural heritage, has embarked on a mission to empower women and create more female-friendly tourist destinations. The 'Sankalp: Safe Tourism Campaign' seeks to train 10,000 women in various hospitality-related roles, encouraging their direct involvement in the tourism industry. Additionally, it aims to provide self-defense training to 40,000 women and raise awareness about safety among both tourists and locals.

Empowering Women: MPs Sankalp Campaign

A Collaborative Effort for Empowerment

This initiative, sanctioned under the 'Nirbhaya Scheme' by the Central Ministry of Women and Child Development, is a collaborative endeavor led by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board. Partners include UN Women, the Women and Child Development Department, the Urban Development and Housing Department, and the Police Department.

Phased Implementation Across 50 Tourist Destinations

The campaign commenced with a 15-day promotional phase from August 10 to August 25. It will then roll out incrementally, dividing 50 tourist destinations into 20 clusters. These destinations include Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, and Kota.

Multi-Faceted Training for Women

As part of the campaign, women from local villages will receive training for various roles such as boat operators, storytellers, guards, drivers, photographers, and self-defense experts. These trained women will host tourists at various attractions, sharing the state's rich history and culture. For instance, in Omkareshwar, women are undergoing training to operate boats, which will soon ferry tourists.

Initiative for Women-Friendly Tourism Destinations

This campaign is a pivotal component of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board's larger initiative, 'Safe Tourism Destination for Women.' This initiative aims to empower women in hospitality, security, driving, photography, self-defense, and more, with the ultimate goal of creating women-friendly tourist destinations across Madhya Pradesh.

The ambitious project plans to train 10,000 women for roles in the tourism industry and provide self-defense skills to 40,000 women in and around 50 destinations, enhancing safety for female travelers.

Economic and Societal Impact

This campaign is expected to breathe new life into Madhya Pradesh's tourism sector, which has faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to elevate the socio-economic status of rural women, boosting their confidence and independence. Furthermore, it aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals of gender equality and decent work.
