UPMRC Unveils Plans for Lucknow Metro's East-West Corridor Construction Starting February 2026

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is preparing to start construction of Lucknow Metro's East-West corridor by February or March 2026. The project is expected to take about five years to complete. The 11.2 km line, approved on August 12, 2025, will pass through some of the busiest and

most congested parts of the city.

Safety Measures taken by UPMRC

Since construction will involve both underground and elevated work, UPMRC is conducting surveys and computer simulations to create a detailed traffic diversion and management plan. This is to ease travel for daily commuters, local businesses, and emergency services during the long construction phase, avoiding road closures and ensuring convenience throughout, according to the officials.

Usage of Advanced Technology to Improve Metro Services

This new corridor will initially operate with three-coach trains, which can later be expanded to five coaches if necessary. This approach is based on the needs of Lucknow's commuters, unlike the first phase, which followed the Delhi Metro model. Officials believe this "leaner" system will be cost-efficient and better suited to the city's needs, based on commuters' forecasts. The stations along this route will be more compact compared to the earlier North-South corridor, focusing on urban footprint and reducing costs while still maintaining comfort and safety. UPMRC will use advanced technologies to speed up construction and minimize disruption, including four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the underground section, to check the TBM entry and exit points for ground visibility. For elevated sections, pre-cast structures will be used, reducing the on-site footprint.

Although the route is shorter than the 23 km North-South line, officials stated that the heavy share of underground work makes it highly technical and time-consuming. With seven underground stations in high-density areas, the construction involves careful tunneling, utility shifting, structural reinforcement, and high safety measures, which justifies the longer time period for completion.
