To ensure a safe and joyful Christmas celebration in Kolkata, the city police have introduced specific traffic guidelines for December 24 and 25, 2024. Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Verma announced these measures to ease traffic congestion and enhance public safety during the festive period. The restrictions will start at 4:00 PM on December 24 and continue until 4:00 AM on December 25. They will resume at 4:00 PM on December 25 and remain in place until the morning of December 26, after which normal traffic flow will be restored.

Traffic Diversions and Restrictions
Significant traffic changes will affect major city roads during this period. Roads like AJC Bose Road, Chowringhee Road, Cathedral Road, and intersections such as Mayo Road and Strand Road with Gosthapal Sarani will see adjusted traffic patterns. To manage congestion, vehicles will be rerouted through alternative roads, including AJC Bose Road, St. Georges Gate Road, and Strand Road.
On December 24, two-way traffic will be prohibited on Park Street, Shakespeare Sarani, and adjacent roads until early December 25. Queensway will temporarily operate as a one-way road from east to west, and Cathedral Road may be entirely closed to vehicles. Southbound traffic on JL Nehru Road, from Ho-Chi-Minh Sarani to AJC Bose Road, will also face diversions via Queensway and Cathedral Road Extension.
Adjustments for December 25
On Christmas Day, restrictions will be extended. Park Street, from JL Nehru Road to Wood Street, and Middleton Street will be closed. Ho-Chi-Minh Sarani will allow eastbound traffic only, while Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road will permit movement in both directions from Royd Street to Park Street. Roads like Russell Street and Little Russell Street will have entry restrictions, and Kyd Street westbound traffic from Free School Street may also face limits. Vehicles heading to Park Street from Outram Road will need to use alternative routes, including Kyd Street and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road.
No-Parking Zones and Post-Christmas Plans
To prevent congestion, no-parking zones will be enforced in key areas, including Park Street, Ho-Chi-Minh Sarani, Camac Street, and parts of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road and Free School Street. These restrictions are aimed at ensuring smoother vehicle movement and a better experience for residents and visitors.
Normal traffic regulations will resume on December 26 and continue through December 30. However, traffic police will manage flow as needed in busy areas like Park Street, Camac Street, and Shakespeare Sarani.
The Kolkata Police have urged citizens to follow these guidelines and cooperate with the temporary measures. These efforts aim to make Christmas celebrations in Kolkata safe, smooth, and enjoyable for everyone.
