Kolkata Metro Projects: Check out the List of Projects to be Restarted After Long Delays

Kolkata Metro and railway officials are now preparing a list of projects that can be restarted after long delays, especially since the same government is expected to be in power at both the Centre and the state. Earlier, the lack of coordination among governments was seen as a major reason

One major problem that may finally be solved is the delay at Chingrighata on the Orange Line. The traffic police have now agreed to allow road blocks from May 15, which are needed to complete construction. A 366-metre gap in the metro viaduct at this location has been stopping progress on the New Garia-Airport corridor. Currently, the line runs only between New Garia and Metropolitan, Beleghata. The project is being handled by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, which has been requesting permission to complete the work since February 2025. A temporary 500-metre road has already been built to divert traffic. Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had ordered the work to be completed by February 15, 2026, but the state challenged this in the Supreme Court of India.

Officials are also hopeful that work on the Purple Line will move forward, which is important for residents of Behala, but the construction of the Esplanade station has been delayed because traders at BC Roy Market are unwilling to relocate. The line currently runs between Joka and Majerhat.

The Yellow Line, which plans to connect Noapara and Barasat, may also progress faster. It is already running between Noapara and the airport, and construction is ongoing up to Michael Nagar. However, approval is still pending for an underground extension to Barasat.

Several other projects that were delayed due to funding issues may now restart, as cost-sharing between the Centre and the state is expected to improve. These include the Pink Line Baranagar-Barrackpore corridor, which could become an extension of the Blue Line, and two Green Line extensions-Howrah Maidan to Santragachhi and Sector V to Teghoria.
