East-West Metro in Kolkata introduces Sunday services, starting September 1, along the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch. Aimed at enhancing weekend travel, the service will see 62 trains operating, with a frequency of every 15 minutes.

Services along the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch of the East-West Metro will now be available on Sundays, officials announced on Thursday. This route, part of Green Line-2, includes a segment that runs under the river Ganga and will start operations from September 1. Trains will run every 15 minutes, with the first departure from Esplanade and Howrah Maidan stations at 2:15 pm and the last at 9:45 pm. A total of 62 trains will operate on Sundays on an experimental basis, according to an official release.

Sunday Service Details

The Sunday service aims to provide more convenience for passengers traveling along this corridor. The first train will leave Esplanade and Howrah Maidan stations at 2:15 pm, ensuring frequent services throughout the day.

The last train from both terminal stations is scheduled to depart at 9:45 pm. This schedule ensures that commuters have ample opportunities to travel between these key locations on Sundays.

Operational Background

Services along the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade corridor commenced from mid-March. The introduction of Sunday services marks a significant step in enhancing public transportation options in Kolkata.

This initiative is expected to benefit many passengers who rely on metro services for their weekend travel needs. The decision to run trains every 15 minutes aims to reduce waiting times and improve overall efficiency.

Future Prospects

The experimental nature of this Sunday service will allow officials to assess its effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments. If successful, it could lead to a permanent addition to the metro's operational schedule.

An official stated, "The introduction of Sunday services is a response to growing demand from passengers for more flexible travel options." This move reflects ongoing efforts to enhance public transport infrastructure in Kolkata.

The East-West Metro project continues to expand its reach, offering improved connectivity across the city. As more sections become operational, residents can expect further enhancements in their daily commute options.
