Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) got the green light to add shared mobility to its feeder service and is gearing up to study the demand and traffic flow, according to The New Indian Express. Although most people in Kerala aren't familiar with shared-auto services, they've proven to be pocket-friendly and convenient in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Jaipur.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of the state gave the thumbs up for shared-auto services back in 2022, but nothing happened afterward. Moreover, the local auto unions aren't too keen on the idea, and it's uncertain how they'll react once the project kicks off, as per reports.
As per the RTA order, e-autos can carry up to three passengers and charge a minimum of 10 rupees for every 2 kilometers traveled. The goal is to offer metro commuters affordable last-mile connectivity. The Kochi Metro project aims to provide a sustainable and inexpensive mode of public transport.
"We're thinking about shared autos as one way to make metro travel more affordable. The study will help us understand the demand and fill in the gaps in transit, especially in areas where buses are scarce or unreliable. It doesn't make sense to hop on the metro for 30 rupees only to shell out 50 rupees for an auto to reach your final stop," said a KMRL official, as quoted by The New Indian Express. The first shared-auto service will run on a trial basis between Cusat metro station and the university campus, which covers 180 acres, the official added.
Explaining the traffic plan further, the official mentioned that the Kochi Regional Transport Authority has given the nod for shared mobility. Talks are also ongoing, considering the regular autos that ply the route. The authorities are working on a system that won't disrupt other drivers, reports say. "Cusat is perfect as students can make use of the service within the campus," the KMRL official noted.
Additionally, the Kochi Metro officials mentioned that shared mobility is on their radar for the future, but they also admitted that implementing it would pose challenges.
