Kochi Metro's Phase II, connecting JLN Stadium station to Infopark via Kakkanad, is progressing

Work on Phase II of the Kochi Metro, which will connect JLN Stadium station to Infopark via Kakkanad, is progressing at a fast pace. The project is one of the biggest urban infrastructure developments currently underway in Kerala. According to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), major construction activities have made significant progress, and the corridor is on track for completion.

The new metro line will be 10.58 kilometres long and will have 10 elevated stations. KMRL expects the main construction work to be completed by June 2027. After that, testing, commissioning, and integration of various systems will be carried out. If everything goes as planned, metro services on the corridor are expected to begin in August 2027.

Kochi Metro's Foundational Work

KMRL stated that all foundation-related work at station locations, including piling and pile-cap construction, has been completed. About 85 percent of the viaduct piling work has also been finished. In addition, nearly 3.5 kilometres of the metro superstructure, including U-girders and I-girders, has already been installed and is ready for track laying.

Officials said viaduct construction is currently progressing at a speed of 25 to 30 metres every day. The pace is expected to increase further after the monsoon season ends. KMRL has also finalised contracts for key systems, including track installation, power supply, signalling, and telecommunications, enabling different parts of the project to advance simultaneously.

Major Challenges

Despite the progress, the project has faced several challenges. Since the metro route passes through densely populated urban areas, relocating utilities has been a major task. One difficult section was the Civil Lane stretch between Pipeline Junction and Padamughal, where an Indian Oil Adani Gas pipeline had to be shifted before construction could continue. The relocation was completed earlier this year, allowing piling and pier work to move ahead.

The project also faced issues due to Kerala Water Authority pipelines and high-voltage power lines. However, KMRL said these challenges are being resolved, and construction work is continuing steadily.
