Parts of Kerala are expected to continue receiving widespread summer rain and thunderstorm activity over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing weather alerts for multiple northern districts.

Weather conditions across the state remain active due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal along with favourable monsoon conditions developing over the Arabian Sea region. Officials have also indicated that the southwest monsoon may arrive in Kerala earlier than usual this year.
Rainfall Activity to Continue Till Saturday
According to the latest weather updates, Kerala is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall in several districts, while isolated areas may receive intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Google Weather data for Thiruvananthapuram showed cloudy conditions with temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius during the day, while thunderstorm activity was expected during afternoon and evening hours. A flash flood risk alert was also visible for parts of the region.
The IMD has warned that rainfall activity is expected to intensify from May 14 onward, particularly across northern Kerala districts.

The weather department has issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in several districts over the coming days.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected
Along with rainfall, gusty winds and thunderstorms are likely across several parts of Kerala over the next few days. Wind speeds between 40 kmph and 50 kmph may occur in isolated areas during intense weather activity.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in hilly and low-lying regions where waterlogging and temporary travel disruptions may develop.
Early Monsoon Signs Over Kerala
Meteorological officials have indicated that conditions are becoming favourable for the early advancement of the southwest monsoon towards Kerala.
Normally, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1 every year. However, current atmospheric conditions suggest that onset over the state could occur earlier than usual this season.
The weather department also noted that the monsoon is likely to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands earlier than its normal schedule, which is being closely monitored as an important indicator for Kerala's monsoon progress.
Regional Outlook
Weather experts said rainfall intensity may temporarily fluctuate over the next two days before becoming more active again across northern districts later this week.
Districts in the Malabar region and hilly areas including Wayanad are expected to witness stronger rainfall activity compared to southern Kerala.
Residents in affected districts have been advised to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms
- Remain alert in waterlogged and low-lying areas
- Follow official weather advisories
- Exercise caution in hilly regions prone to landslides or flash flooding
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring rainfall patterns and issue updated alerts depending on the movement of the low-pressure system and monsoon conditions.
