Kerala Under Yellow Alert: Heavy Rain Forecast From IMD Until October 11

The India Meteorological Department has issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in several districts across Kerala. Thunderstorms are expected until October 11. Residents are advised to stay informed and exercise caution.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for several districts in Kerala, warning of continued rainfall. On Monday, Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are expected to experience heavy rains. The IMD has also extended the alert to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Wayanad for October 8-9.

Weather Conditions and Forecast

Thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall are anticipated in parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam districts. Rainfall is expected to range from 5-15 mm per hour with gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h. The IMD has forecasted these conditions to persist until October 11.

Rainfall data collected until 5:30 pm on Sunday shows significant precipitation across various regions. Kannur Airport recorded 93 mm of rain while Palakkad received 28 mm. Karipur Airport saw 13 mm of rainfall and both Alappuzha and Kannur reported 7 mm each. Punalur experienced a lesser amount with just 5 mm.

Rainfall Measurements Across Kerala

Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) and Automated Rain Gauges (ARG) have provided detailed measurements for specific areas. Anakkayam in Malappuram recorded 71 mm of rain while Panniyoor in Kannur saw 64 mm. Panathur in Kasaragod district registered a rainfall of 62.5 mm.

Idukki's Udumbannoor district received 50.5 mm of rain. In Malappuram district, Nilambur recorded 35.5 mm while Palemad and Munderi saw 23 mm and 20 mm respectively. Other notable readings include Peringome in Kannur with 22.5 mm and Karapuzha in Wayanad with 21 mm.

Historical Context

Kerala has previously experienced severe weather conditions leading to tragic outcomes. In June, heavy rains coupled with thunderstorms resulted in landslides across various areas causing over 200 fatalities. This historical context underscores the importance of the current weather warnings issued by the IMD.
