The southwest monsoon has remained active across Kerala over the past few days, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall, especially in the central and northern parts of the state. Although the rain has not been extremely heavy, several districts have received steady showers. According to weather officials, the current spell of
rain is caused by a depression over western Vidarbha and adjoining south Madhya Pradesh, along with an offshore trough extending from South Gujarat to North Kerala.
Kerala Weather Records
During the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday, Peerumedu in Idukki district recorded the highest rainfall at 11 cm. Vythiri in Wayanad and Ayyankunnu in Kannur received 9 cm of rain each, while Munnar in Idukki recorded 7 cm. Strong westerly to northwesterly winds are also blowing across Kerala and the Lakshadweep region, adding to the rainy weather.
The bad weather also affected air travel. An IndiGo flight travelling from Kochi to the Maldives and an Air India Express flight flying from Bengaluru to Kochi were diverted to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport due to poor weather conditions.
Kerala Rain Alert Today
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for nine districts on Saturday, August 1. These districts are Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected.
The remaining five districts, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam, have been placed under a yellow alert. The IMD has warned that these areas may also receive isolated heavy rainfall. People are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to waterlogging, landslides, or travel disruptions due to continuous rain.
