Kerala is expected to witness widespread heavy rainfall over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow and orange alerts in several districts. On Thursday, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur are under an orange alert, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain. Most of the remaining districts have been placed under a yellow alert, except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha.
Kerala Rain Alert Today; Rainfall to Continue Friday & Saturday
The IMD has predicted that the heavy rain will continue on Friday and Saturday as well. Over the past two days, both yellow and orange alerts have been issued across all districts, warning of the possibility of heavy rainfall in many areas.
Reason Behind Kerala's Rainfall
According to the weather department, the rainy conditions are being caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, located near the Odisha-West Bengal coast. This weather system is expected to strengthen the monsoon over Kerala, leading to widespread rainfall across the state.
Advisory for Kerala Residents
The IMD has also issued strong wind and fishermen's warnings for Kerala and Lakshadweep, which will remain in effect until August 2. Along the Kerala coast, squally weather is expected from Thursday to Sunday, with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph and gusts reaching 60 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period because of rough sea conditions.
However, despite the forecast of heavy rain over the coming days, Kerala is still facing a 36% rainfall deficit during the current southwest monsoon season, which runs from June 1 to July 29. Among all districts, Idukki and Wayanad have recorded the highest rainfall shortage, with a 60% deficit. Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with weather forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and follow all safety guidelines issued by local officials.
