Kerala is expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next two days as the southwest monsoon has become active again due to a deep depression over west-central Chhattisgarh and nearby parts of Vidarbha and southeast Madhya Pradesh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather system is likely to weaken into a depression over the next 12 hours. However, it will continue to influence weather conditions in Kerala and bring widespread rainfall.
Kerala Orange Alert on Friday
Considering the possibility of heavy rain, the IMD has issued an orange alert for 11 districts of Kerala on Friday, July 31. An orange alert means residents should be prepared for heavy to very heavy rainfall and possible disruptions. The remaining three districts: Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram have been placed under a yellow alert, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.
Kerala Orange Alert on Saturday
The weather department has also issued an orange alert for nine districts on Saturday, while the remaining five districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under a yellow alert.
Reason behind Kerala's Rainfall
The IMD said the State may experience intense spells of rain because of the combined effect of the weather system and an offshore trough extending from south Gujarat to north Kerala. In addition, strong westerly and northwesterly winds over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region are expected to strengthen rainfall activity further.
Advisory for Kerala Residents
The IMD has advised people to stay alert as heavy rain may lead to waterlogging, poor visibility, traffic disruptions and a rise in water levels in rivers and low-lying areas. Residents, especially those living in flood-prone and hilly regions, have been asked to follow updates issued by local authorities and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
