The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for nine districts in Kerala on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, warning of very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The weather department has advised people in the affected areas to remain alert as heavy rain could lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and other weather-related problems.

Kerala Orange Alert
The districts placed under the orange alert are Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki. As per the Orange Alert, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, and residents should be prepared for possible disruptions. Local authorities may also issue safety instructions depending on the weather conditions.
Several Districts Under Yellow Alert
Apart from these districts, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta. A yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. While the rain may not be as heavy as in the orange alert districts, people should still remain cautious, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone areas.
According to the IMD, the current weather conditions are being influenced by an offshore trough running along the west coast of India. This weather system extends up to central Kerala and is expected to strengthen rainfall activity across the state.
Advisory for Residents
The weather department has also predicted that heavy rainfall is likely to continue on both Wednesday and Thursday. Residents, especially those living in hilly regions and areas vulnerable to flooding or landslides, have been advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow the instructions issued by district authorities.
People are also advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, as heavy showers may affect road conditions and visibility. The IMD will continue to monitor the weather situation and provide further updates if needed.
