Kolkata’s Puja crowds will get 51 extra Sealdah local trains between October 16 and 21. Eastern Railway will run 38 overnight services from 11 pm to 5 am. Thirteen more will run during evening peaks across the main, north and south sections. The plan targets pandal hoppers and late returns, up from 31 specials last year.
Operations change for smoother dispersal after dusk. From 2 pm, galloping Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains will halt at all stations. Hubs including Sealdah, Ballygunge, Dum Dum, Sonarpur, Naihati and Ranaghat get added facilities. “Total 51 special trains will be run between Oct 16 and 21 against 31 last year. This year there will be 38 overnight train services,” said Sealdah DRM Rajeev Saxena.

Crowd-control at Sealdah, Ballygunge, Dum Dum, Naihati
Sealdah will separate entry and exit via Prafulla, North, Main, Central and South gates. Extra toilets are ready at Sealdah, Ballygunge and Dum Dum. Dum Dum’s circulating area and nearby roads have been upgraded for smoother dispersal. Temporary counters open at Ranaghat and Barrackpore to ease ticketing. A 24x7 war room and over 3,500 CCTV cameras monitor flows across the division.
Live status and Metro interchanges for Puja week
Track live running on the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app using Live Station. It shows arrivals and departures at your chosen stations in near real time. Switch lines via Sealdah’s East-West Metro and Dum Dum’s Blue Line link to Dum Dum Junction. These interchanges shorten transfers and reduce queues during heavy pandal hours.
For October 16–21 nights, arrive early, follow gate markings, and board the first available overnight EMU. Expect final specials by 5 am and longer gaps after that. With all-stations halts after 2 pm and quick Metro interchanges, longer pandal trails become smoother. Check NTES before you start, and prefer staffed halts flagged in the schedule card.
