The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a special weather bulletin warning of severe rainfall across Kerala over the next few days. The department said that widespread rain and thunderstorms are very likely in most parts of the state on October 23 (Thursday).

Reasons Behind Kerala's Severe Rainfall
• Arabian Sea Depression: A well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea turned into a depression on October 22. It was located about 630 km west-southwest of Lakshadweep and is expected to move north-northwest slowly over the next 24 hours.
• Bay of Bengal System: Another low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the Tamil Nadu coast, is also strengthening. It may turn into a depression and move toward the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.
• Cyclonic Circulation: An upper air cyclonic circulation continues over the south Andaman Sea region, adding to the unstable weather.
Districts on Alert
IMD has issued a Yellow Alert (indicating heavy rain between 7-11 cm in 24 hours) for nine districts on October 23: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod. On October 24, heavy rainfall is also expected in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) are likely in parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep until October 26.
Possible Impact
The continuous heavy rain may cause flash floods, waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions. Trees and structures could be damaged, and farmers may face crop loss. The IMD has urged people to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
