IMD Issues Alert for Kerala: Heavy Rain Expected in Districts on October 29

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur for Wednesday, October 29. This is because of a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea, unlike the storm Cyclone Montha forming in the Bay of Bengal,

which is causing rain and thunderstorms across Kerala.

Weather Prediction in Kerala

The IMD expects light to moderate rain in most places and isolated heavy rainfall in the alert districts on 29 October. As it has declared a yellow alert in these regions, the areas may receive between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours. So far, no official school-holiday announcement has been made in those eight districts. Authorities are advising people to be cautious and keep an eye on the weather updates.

Moreover, the depression is interacting with the system over the Bay of Bengal, amplifying rainfall chances in Kerala. For example, roads are getting waterlogged, and in some places, including Idukki, mudslides and road destruction have been reported.

Recent Study Regarding Kerala's Weather

A recent study finds that rainfall patterns across Kerala vary from north to south. In the northern regions, there tend to be fewer rainy days but higher rainfall intensity, meaning heavy downpours happen over short periods. In contrast, the southern parts experience more rainy days, but the intensity is generally lower each day.
The research also shows that during the south-west monsoon season (June-September), rainfall increases from south to north. Meanwhile, during the north-east monsoon (October-December), the trend flips and rainfall decreases from south to north.

These distinctions are important because they highlight how geography, such as latitude and elevation, influences how and where rain falls in Kerala. Understanding this helps with better managing water resources, agriculture, and disaster preparedness in different parts of the state.
