The sacred Kedarnath Temple, one of the most revered temples in India, will close its doors for the winter season on November 3 at 8:30 AM. This closure date was announced by temple authorities and confirmed by Vijay Prasad Thapliyal, the chief official of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee. The closure coincides with the Hindu festival Bhai Dooj, which celebrates the bond between siblings.

Winter Prayers at Shri Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath
While the Kedarnath Temple will be closed for winter, devotees can still offer their prayers to Lord Kedarnath at his winter abode, the Shri Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. This arrangement allows worshippers to continue their devotion even when the main temple is inaccessible due to the harsh weather in the upper Garhwal region. Kedarnath is one of the four Char Dhams, a group of important Hindu pilgrimage sites.
Closing Dates of Other Char Dham Temples
Every year, Kedarnath Temple, along with the other Char Dhams, closes its doors around October or November and reopens in April or May. This year, Yamunotri Temple will also close on Bhai Dooj, while Gangotri will close a day after Diwali during Annakut. The closure date for Badrinath Temple will be decided after Dussehra festivities are completed.
Historical and Spiritual Significance
According to ancient Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu's avatars, Nar and Narayan, performed penance on the Kedar peak in the Himalayas. Their devotion pleased Lord Shiva, who appeared before them and agreed to reside there as a Jyotirlinga. This legend adds to the spiritual significance of Kedarnath Temple and attracts countless devotees each year.
Tradition and Preservation
The seasonal closure of Kedarnath and other Char Dham temples has been a tradition for generations. This practice ensures the preservation of the temple structures and surrounding areas during the harsh winter months in the Himalayas. The closure period also provides a time for reflection for many pilgrims, as they look back on their spiritual journeys and prepare for future visits when the temple reopens.
As the temples close, the local community works to protect these holy sites from the extreme weather, allowing the temples to stand strong for generations to come.
The exact closure date for Badrinath Temple will be determined during Dussehra, in keeping with local customs and religious practices.
