As the monsoon strengthens across Karnataka, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert. This alert means heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are likely in the coastal, northern, and southern districts of the state. The weather warning will be in effect from October 14 to 18, indicating a significant increase in monsoon activity.

In Bengaluru, residents are preparing for heavy downpours. An orange alert has been declared for October 17 in the southern and coastal areas. This alert highlights the seriousness of the expected weather conditions. However, the northern interior regions of Karnataka are expected to stay dry during this period.
Coastal Karnataka is facing strong winds of 35 to 45 km per hour, bringing stormy weather. Due to these conditions, the IMD has strongly advised fishermen against going to sea until the weather improves. As Bengaluru and nearby districts experience heavy rain since the early morning hours, significant disruptions have occurred. Traffic congestion is a common sight, making daily commutes difficult for locals, including traders and motorists dealing with the inconvenience.
Heavy rainfall since early Tuesday has caused disruptions in central and southern Karnataka, including Bengaluru. Due to the heavy rains and a Yellow Alert from the IMD, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools on Wednesday, October 16th, and suggested companies allow employees to work from home. Many companies have already announced work-from-home for tomorrow.
Several low-lying areas were flooded since Tuesday morning. Bengaluru received 16 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, up until 8:30 am on Tuesday. The IMD's Yellow Alert warns of worsening weather that could further affect daily life. The district administration has issued a notice, closing all schools and colleges on October 16th as a safety measure. Schools already have a holiday on Thursday, October 17th, for Valmiki Jayanti.
Maximum Rainfall Recorded
On Sunday, October 13, Karkala in Udupi and BaleHonnur in Chikmagalur recorded the highest amounts of rainfall. Other areas affected include Nanjangud, Jayapura, and Bellur, among many more across the state. This heavy rain has disrupted daily life and raised concerns about potential damage, making preparedness essential.
In response to the intense rainfall, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued an orange alert for various districts in Tamil Nadu until October 18. They expect rainfall of up to 204 mm. In preparation for the rain, the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority is getting ready 65,000 volunteers for rescue and relief efforts, working with state government agencies. In Chennai alone, 10,000 volunteers are on standby to assist residents affected by the heavy rain. The RMC forecasts heavy rainfall in districts including Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Dindigul, starting Sunday.
The increase in monsoon activity has led to widespread preparations across affected regions. Authorities are taking significant steps to reduce the impact of the heavy rainfall. These preparations show how important it is to be ready for the challenges that come with the monsoon season.
As the weather situation develops, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in Karnataka and neighboring Tamil Nadu. Local governments and agencies are urging residents to stay informed about the weather conditions and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property during this intense period of rainfall.
The IMD's alerts and the ongoing preparations by authorities underscore the seriousness of the monsoon's impact in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Residents are advised to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety guidelines to stay safe during this rainy period.
