IRCTC Changes Rules: Announces New 60-Day Advance Booking Policy; Check Details

Indian Railways has announced a major change to its advance train ticket reservation system. From November 1, 2024, passengers will now be able to book their train tickets 60 days in advance, instead of the previous window of 120 days. This new policy aims to make it easier and more convenient for travelers to plan their trips closer to their departure dates.

Indian Railways Changes Rules Advance

Key Changes in Advance Booking

- New Booking Window: Beginning November 1, 2024, passengers can book train tickets up to 60 days before the train's scheduled departure, instead of the current 120 days. This will allow travelers to make their reservations based on more immediate plans.

- Effective Date: This change will officially come into effect on November 1, 2024. Passengers are advised to keep this in mind when planning their trips.

- Existing Bookings: Tickets that have already been booked before November 1, 2024, will not be affected by this change. The new rule will apply only to bookings made after this date. Bookings made under the current 120-day ARP before October 31 will remain valid

AI to Improve Seat Allocation

In addition to this reservation change, Indian Railways is also incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the overall travel experience. AI will be used to optimize seat allocation, which will increase the likelihood of passengers receiving confirmed seats. In fact, AI integration has already led to a 30% increase in confirmed ticket rates.

AI is also being used for other services. For example, AI-enabled cameras will help monitor the quality of food and linens provided on trains, ensuring passengers enjoy better services during their journeys.

Changes Exclude Certain Trains and Foreign Tourist Booking

The official notice states that the new changes will not apply to some daytime express trains, like the Taj Express and Gomti Express, which have different advance booking rules. Also, the option for foreign tourists to book tickets 365 days in advance will stay the same, according to Indian Railways.

Other Improvements in Indian Railways

Indian Railways has also implemented various changes aimed at improving safety, infrastructure, and efficiency:

- Safety Enhancements: The number of train accidents has significantly dropped, with accidents decreasing from an average of 171 per year (2004-2014) to just 68 per year (2014-2024). This is due to improved safety measures.

- Infrastructure Development: The Indian government has made record investments in railway infrastructure, allocating ₹2,62,200 crores in the Union Budget 2024-25. These funds will go towards building industrial clusters and developing new railway corridors.

- Electrification: Indian Railways has electrified over 41,655 Route Kilometers (RKMs) in the last decade, a major increase compared to 21,413 RKMs before 2014. This is part of a larger effort to modernize and increase efficiency.

The new 60-day advance reservation policy, along with AI advancements and other improvements, showcases Indian Railways' commitment to providing a more efficient and user-friendly experience for passengers. These changes aim to modernize the railway system and make travel easier, safer, and more comfortable for all.
