In a significant step towards enhancing urban transportation, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) has issued a tender worth Rs 2,550 crore for the construction of an 8.5-kilometre underground metro corridor in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This tender, set to be unveiled in April, marks a pivotal moment in the city's infrastructure development, aiming to streamline the commute for its residents.
The envisioned corridor is designed to traverse the heart of Indore, initiating from near Treasure Island on MG Road and extending through key locations including the High Court, Rajwada, Bada Ganpati, Ramchandra Nagar, BSF, culminating at the airport. The proposed underground stretch will feature twin tunnels and incorporate seven stations, enhancing the connectivity across the city.
Notably, this initiative represents the fifth substantial tender by MPMRCL for the metro project, signaling a robust commitment to advancing Indore's urban mobility. The project's scope includes the construction of underground stations at strategic locations such as Indore Railway Station, Rajwada, Bada Ganpati, and others, facilitating easy access for commuters.
Progress and Opposition
Concurrently, the construction of an elevated corridor from Gandhi Nagar to Robot Square is progressing swiftly. Upon completion, the first phase of the metro corridor will span approximately 32.32 km, connecting vital city zones and significantly reducing travel time for daily commuters.
The underground construction will employ advanced tunnel boring machines, with an estimated 16 tunnels slated for development. The completion timeline for the underground corridor is set at 1456 days, or roughly four years, with the project budget estimated at Rs 2,550 crore.
However, the project has sparked concerns among local traders and residents, particularly about the potential impact on the city's central area. Fears regarding the structural integrity of historical buildings and the vibrational damage from tunneling work have led to a growing opposition, with some community members seeking legal counsel to challenge the underground route.
Metro Infrastructure and Community Impact
The arrival of the fourth set of rolling stock for the Indore metro, also known as the Yellow Line Metro, underscores the project's momentum. This addition is geared towards serving the super priority and priority corridor, further illustrating the comprehensive planning behind Indore's metro project.
The extensive metro network, upon completion, will encompass 32.3 kilometres, including 22.7 kilometres of elevated metro and 8.8 kilometres of underground metro. With a total investment of Rs 7,501 crore, the project aims to establish 28 metro stations across the city, comprising seven underground and 21 elevated stations. This infrastructure is anticipated to cater to approximately 7 lakh passengers daily, significantly easing the city's traffic congestion and contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
