IndiGo, the nation's leading airline, recently unveiled a new scheme tailored specifically for students, offering them an array of perks when they book flights directly through the airline's website mobile application. This initiative, named 'Student Special,' is designed to enhance the travel experience for students by providing them with exclusive benefits catered to their unique needs. Key features of this offer include the ability to modify flight bookings without incurring a standard change fee, a discount of up to 6 percent on the base fare, and an additional baggage allowance of 10 kg to accommodate their academic materials and essentials.

Understanding the financial and logistical challenges students often face, IndiGo has structured this offer to alleviate some of these pressures. The flexibility to change flight bookings without a fee addresses the unpredictable nature of academic schedules, allowing students to adapt their travel plans without financial penalties. Moreover, the discount on the base fare makes air travel more affordable for students, while the extra baggage allowance acknowledges the need for students to transport study-related materials and personal essentials as they travel to and from their educational institutions.
To be eligible for these benefits, students must be over 12 years of age and present a valid student identification document, such as a school or university ID, at the time of check-in for verification purposes. IndiGo has made it clear on its website that failure to present the appropriate ID will result in the passenger being charged the prevailing fare rates. This requirement ensures that the offer reaches its intended audience, providing targeted support to the student community.
Exclusivity and Direct Booking Advantages
The 'Student Special' fares are exclusive to IndiGo's domestic flights, emphasizing the airline's commitment to supporting the domestic student population. Additionally, to avail of these special fares and added benefits, students must book their tickets directly through IndiGo's official channels. This direct booking approach is preferred by the airline as it circumvents additional booking fees charged by third-party travel portals, which are otherwise absorbed by the airline.
Vinay Malhotra, the head of global sales at IndiGo, highlighted the company's understanding of the distinct requirements of student travelers. "We are conscious of the unique needs of students and have accordingly carved out a 'Student Special' offering," Malhotra stated, underscoring the aim to make air travel more accessible and flexible for students. This focus on direct bookings is also financially advantageous for travelers, with IndiGo's website indicating that direct bookings could secure up to a 15 percent discount as part of a "limited-time offer."
Apart from benefiting the students, this strategic offering has positively impacted IndiGo's market performance. The airline's parent company, Interglobe Aviation, saw a significant uptick in its stock value, marking a 6.5 percent increase over the week and concluding a five-week downturn. The stock recorded a 1.8 percent rise on Friday, closing at Rs 4,142 per share on the BSE as of November 22. This surge in stock value reflects investor confidence in IndiGo's initiatives, such as the 'Student Special' offer, which not only cater to specific customer segments but also promise broader business advantages.
IndiGo's 'Student Special' offer represents a thoughtful approach to addressing the travel needs of the student population. By providing benefits like fee-free booking modifications, fare discounts, and extra baggage allowance, the airline is making air travel more accessible and convenient for students. This initiative, coupled with the requirement for direct booking, showcases IndiGo's commitment to enhancing customer experience while also leveraging business efficiencies.
