IndiGo Airlines To Launch New Flights From Sikkim's Pakyong Airport

IndiGo Airlines will start flights from Sikkim's Pakyong Airport, connecting it with major Indian cities. This move is anticipated to significantly boost tourism in the region and enhance its connectivity.

IndiGo Airlines is set to begin flights from Sikkim's Pakyong Airport in October. The airline will connect Pakyong with Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. This move is expected to enhance tourism in Sikkim significantly.

Potential New Airline Services

Pakyong Airport director Sanjeev Kumar Singh mentioned that discussions are ongoing with other airlines like Blade Air and Jetwing. "There is a possibility that operations will start soon as Sikkim government is presently reviewing the proposal of Blade Air while Jetwing already has been allotted flight from Guwahati to Pakyong under the Regional Connectivity Scheme of the Government of India, and they will start operations by November this year if the conditions are favourable," he said.

Currently, SpiceJet is the only airline operating flights between Delhi, Kolkata, and Pakyong. The addition of IndiGo and potentially other airlines could provide more options for travellers.

International Connections

Nepal's Buddha Air has shown interest in launching daily flights from Kathmandu to Pakyong. However, this plan awaits approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. If approved, it would mark a significant step towards international connectivity for Sikkim.

The commercial viability and data analysis for these new routes are being assessed by IndiGo and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This assessment will determine the feasibility of sustaining these new services.

The introduction of these new flights aligns with efforts to boost regional connectivity under the Government of India's Regional Connectivity Scheme. This initiative aims to make air travel more accessible across various parts of India.

With these developments, Sikkim's tourism sector stands to benefit greatly. Increased flight options could attract more visitors, boosting local businesses and the economy.

The final decision on these new routes will depend on several factors, including regulatory approvals and market demand. However, the outlook appears promising for enhanced air connectivity in Sikkim.

These potential new services reflect a broader trend towards improving regional air travel infrastructure in India. By expanding flight options, regions like Sikkim can become more accessible to both domestic and international tourists.

This expansion could also provide a significant boost to local economies by increasing tourist footfall and creating new business opportunities related to travel and hospitality.

As these plans progress, stakeholders remain optimistic about the positive impact on Sikkim's tourism industry. Enhanced connectivity could make it easier for travellers to explore this picturesque region.

The proposed flight operations from Pakyong Airport represent a significant step forward in making Sikkim more accessible. With increased connectivity, more people can experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of this unique state.
