Indian Railways is preparing to launch its first hydrogen-powered train, with trial runs expected to start in December 2024. This marks a significant step towards eco-friendly and sustainable transportation in India. The project, called "Hydrogen for Heritage," is a part of a bigger plan to develop 35 hydrogen-powered trains. These trains will run on selected routes, beginning with the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana.
The hydrogen train prototype is currently being developed at the Chennai Coach Factory, and each hydrogen-powered train will cost approximately ₹80 crores. To ensure the smooth operation of these trains, an additional ₹70 crores will be invested in building infrastructure on each route.
Key Features of the Hydrogen Train
1. Eco-Friendly Technology
Hydrogen trains are an important solution for reducing pollution. Unlike diesel trains, which emit harmful greenhouse gases, hydrogen-powered trains only release water vapor and heat into the environment. This makes them an excellent choice for cutting down emissions and combating climate change.
2. Partnership with Germany
Indian Railways has teamed up with Germany's TUV-SUD for a safety audit of the hydrogen train. The hydrogen fuel system and the overall technology are being integrated at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. To make the trains operational, a special refuelling station will be set up at Jind. This station will store up to three tonnes of hydrogen and will have a compressor and dispensers for rapid refueling.
3. Infrastructure Development
Significant investments are being made to support hydrogen-powered trains. A hydrogen production unit, featuring a 1-megawatt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, will be installed in Jind, Haryana. This facility will produce hydrogen fuel for the trains, ensuring that the project runs smoothly and sustainably.
4. Operational Routes
Initially, the hydrogen trains will be introduced on heritage and hilly routes, which will not only support tourism but also promote sustainable transportation. These routes offer scenic journeys, which can be further enhanced by these quiet, eco-friendly trains.
Other Countries With Hydrogen-Powered Trains
With the launch of its hydrogen train, India will become the fifth country in the world to operate hydrogen-powered trains, joining the ranks of Germany, France, Sweden, and China.
1. Germany: Germany was the first to launch a hydrogen-powered train, the Alstom Coradia iLint, in 2018. These trains run on regional routes and have set a strong example for hydrogen train technology.
2. United Kingdom: The UK is currently testing hydrogen trains as part of its plan to stop using diesel trains by 2040. This is part of their bigger goal to make the rail network greener.
3. France: France has ordered hydrogen trains for several regional routes, with plans to begin service by 2025. This is part of the country's effort to cut down on carbon emissions in transportation.
4. China: China is also working on hydrogen-powered trains, aiming to use this technology in its vast rail system.
5. United States: The US has recently introduced its first hydrogen-powered train in California. The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority received a train from Swiss company Stadler, marking a big step toward green rail transport.
The launch of hydrogen trains in India is a major step forward in the country's journey towards sustainable and eco-friendly rail transport. It will reduce the country's carbon footprint and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
