Indian Railways made major progress in 2025 by expanding its network into some of the most difficult terrains in the country. Key projects included India's first vertical-lift railway bridge at Pamban in Tamil Nadu and the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab River. These projects created a reliable, all-weather

rail connection to Kashmir. Rail connectivity also reached Mizoram with the opening of the Birabi-Sairang line, completing a long-awaited link to the Northeast and helping connect remote and strategically important regions with the rest of India.
New Railway Projects
During the year, the Ministry of Railways launched 42 new projects worth over ₹25,000 crore. Special train services were operated on a large scale to manage heavy passenger demand, especially during festivals. Vande Bharat services were expanded with 15 new trains added in 2025, taking the total to 164. The rail network also saw the addition of 13 Amrit Bharat trains, increasing their total number to 30. Two Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services started operations, linking Bhuj with Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Jaynagar in Bihar with Patna.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
Moreover, Indian Railways plans to introduce the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train for AC passengers. In 2025 alone, around 43,000 special train trips were run to handle peak travel periods. Infrastructure development remained a priority, with over 900 km of new railway lines commissioned and extensive renewal of old tracks. Electrification of the broad-gauge network reached nearly full completion at 99.2 per cent.
Safety Measures Taken
Safety also improved significantly, with train accidents falling to 11 by November, compared to 31 the previous year. To ease traffic and improve safety, 1,161 road-over-bridges and road-under-bridges were built. Station redevelopment moved forward rapidly, with 1,337 stations taken up under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, many of which now offer modern facilities.
New Growth
Manufacturing saw strong growth, with over 4,224 LHB coaches produced by November 2025-26. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project achieved over 55 per cent physical progress. Freight operations improved with the commissioning of major freight corridors, higher wagon production, and the launch of the RailOne App and Aadhaar-based ticket booking reforms to enhance passenger convenience.
