The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has urged Indian citizens residing in Myanmar's Rakhine state to leave the area immediately. The advisory, issued on Tuesday, highlighted the deteriorating security situation in the region, cautioning against travel to Rakhine. The escalating violence in Myanmar, particularly in the Rakhine state, has been a cause for concern, with ongoing clashes between armed ethnic groups and the ruling junta since October 2023.

The term "junta," defined by Merriam-Webster as "a group of persons controlling a government, especially after a revolutionary seizure of power," refers to the Myanmar military regime that seized power through a coup in February 2021. The junta has consistently refused to recognize election results, including the landslide victory of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD).
Over the past few months, violence has intensified in various towns and regions near the India-Myanmar border, creating a volatile situation for the neighboring states, including Nagaland and Manipur, which share a 1,640-km-long border with Myanmar.
The Myanmar military's use of airstrikes against armed opposition groups and their incursions into Indian territory to escape attacks have added to the complexity of the situation. In December of the previous year, 151 Myanmarese soldiers sought refuge in Mizoram after their camps were attacked by a pro-democracy ethnic group. Similarly, in November, 104 soldiers crossed the Indo-Myanmar border to flee to Mizoram.
The MEA's advisory underscores the challenges faced by Indian citizens in Rakhine, citing the deteriorating security situation, disrupted communication channels, and a severe scarcity of essential commodities.
This advisory aligns with India's consistent efforts to address the unrest in Myanmar. Last week, Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA official spokesperson, expressed concern over the deteriorating situation, emphasizing its direct implications for India. "As a neighboring country and friend of Myanmar, India has long been advocating for a complete cessation of violence and Myanmar's transition towards inclusive federal democracy," he stated.
The appeal to Indian citizens and the ongoing diplomatic efforts emphasize India's commitment to peace in the region and support for Myanmar's transition to a more inclusive democratic system.
As the situation continues to evolve, the MEA's advisory serves as a crucial reminder for Indian citizens to prioritize their safety and leave the affected region promptly. The appeal reflects India's stance as a responsible neighbor and ally, extending support for a peaceful resolution in Myanmar.
