In a surprising turn of events, Mumbai seems to be eluding winter's chill as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a rise in temperatures over the next few days. After a brief dip in the mercury levels last week, the maximum temperatures are now expected to hover between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius, indicating a departure from the typical winter conditions.

Meteorologists have pointed out that the city usually experiences a drop in temperatures during winter, but the absence of any weather system suggests that maximum temperatures will remain relatively high this week. Mr. Kamble, a meteorologist, stated, "Currently, there is no weather system which indicates that the maximum temperatures will drop this week." On Sunday, the IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees, slightly above the normal range.
While the maximum temperatures show no signs of relenting, a marginal drop in the minimum temperatures was noted last week, attributed to the influx of northerly winds, according to experts. The IMD Mumbai officials reported that the minimum temperatures in Santacruz touched 21 degrees, deviating three degrees below normal. Similarly, the Colaba station recorded 22 degrees, a two-degree drop below the stipulated norm.
In stark contrast, cold weather conditions have gripped parts of Odisha, where temperatures have plummeted below the 10 degrees Celsius mark. G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district recorded the state's lowest temperature at 7.2 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, indicated varying temperatures across different districts, with Keonjhar and Kirei in Sundergarh district recording 9.4 degrees Celsius, Daringbadi at 9.5, and Phulbani at 10 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, tribal areas in Kandhamal, Koraput, Sundergarh, and Keonjhar districts witnessed residents gathering around fires to combat the cold. The arrival of cold weather conditions in Odisha was delayed this year, extending from November to the first week of December. Cyclonic influences and north-westerly dry winds contributed to a drop of 2-3 degrees Celsius in night temperatures over the last couple of days.
As winter unfolds in its unique ways across different regions, Mumbai seems to be on a warmer trajectory, defying the traditional expectations of a chilly December. Whether you're reaching for a light jacket or enjoying the warmth, these fluctuations in weather patterns remind us of the diverse climates India embraces.
