Amritsar Records 4.7°C Minimum Temperature, Kolkata Experiences Coldest Day

As winter unfolds its chilly embrace across the nation, Kolkata woke up to the coldest day of the season on Wednesday, with the minimum temperature dropping to a brisk 14.6 degrees Celsius. The cold wave doesn't stop at Kolkata, as Purulia recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 10.3 degrees Celsius. Following closely were Bankura at 10.6 degrees Celsius and Kalimpong at 11.5 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Office predicts that the dry spell will continue for the next five days, with the minimum temperature expected to further plummet across West Bengal.

A senior official from the Met department highlighted the potential for snowfall in high-altitude areas of Darjeeling, Kalimpong districts, and Sikkim. "Cold winds from the north will bring down the temperature across the state," the official stated, emphasizing the grip of winter on West Bengal.

The Met Office forecasts rain in the next 48 hours for Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, raising the possibility of snowfall in these regions. However, the rest of the state is expected to remain rain-free. The ideal conditions for the free flow of chilly winds from the north contribute to the overall drop in temperature, making the winter experience more palpable for residents.

Burbhum and Purba Bardhaman districts reported a minimum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, indicating the widespread impact of the winter chill. Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts minimum temperatures ranging from 6 to 10 degrees Celsius over most parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, north Rajasthan, and north Uttar Pradesh.

Moreover, dense fog is expected during morning hours in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana, and north Uttar Pradesh on the 14th and 15th of December, with Tripura also anticipated to experience foggy conditions on the 14th. Shallow to moderate fog is likely in isolated pockets over East India during the morning hours of the 14th and 15th of December, 2023.

The city of Amritsar in Punjab reported the lowest minimum temperature across the plains of the country, reaching 4.7 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, on the coastal front, Honavar in Coastal Karnataka recorded the highest maximum temperature at 35.4 degrees Celsius.

The upcoming 48 hours pose the possibility of not only rain but also potential snowfall in specific regions, creating a picturesque winter scene. As winter weaves its magic across the nation, it's time to bring out the warm clothes and enjoy the chilly charm that the season brings.

With temperatures dipping below 15 degrees Celsius in most parts of Bengal and a forecast of further drops, it's safe to say that winter has officially settled in, bringing with it the promise of cozy evenings and the joy of winter festivities.
