North Tamil Nadu, and at isolated places in South Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with thunderstorms and lightning possible in a few areas. The IMD also warned that heavy to severe rain may occur in Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chennai. These districts have been placed under an orange alert, while yellow alerts have been issued for Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry, where heavy rainfall is also expected.

Cyclonic Storm to Hit Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday

Cyclone Montha (pronounced Mon-Tha) is currently over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, moving west-northwest at about 16 kmph. As of early Monday morning, the storm was located around 600 km east-southeast of Chennai, 680 km south-southeast of Kakinada, and 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam. The system is expected to strengthen into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by Tuesday morning and make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on the evening or night of October 28, with wind speeds of 90-100 kmph and gusts up to 110 kmph.

Rainfall in Chennai

Weather blogger R. Pradeep John, known as the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, predicted moderate rains and a noticeable drop in temperature for Chennai. He said north Chennai could get 50-70 mm of rainfall, while southern areas might see 10-50 mm. Heavy rains are more likely in Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, and Pulicat near the Andhra border. Moreover, rain is expected to begin Monday morning, continuing through the day with short heavy spells before easing by Tuesday morning.
