IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain for Bengaluru, 30-40% More Rain Predicted; Check Details

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted contrasting weather conditions across Karnataka in the coming weeks. While Bengaluru and southern Karnataka are expected to receive heavy pre-monsoon rainfall, northern parts of the state may face intense heatwave conditions.

Heavy Rain for Bengaluru

Rainfall Relief for Bengaluru and Southern Karnataka

Bengaluru and the southern regions are expected to receive significantly more rain than usual, offering relief after an unusually warm February. The IMD predicts 30-40% more pre-monsoon showers between March and May. This rainfall is expected to moderate the daytime heat in Bengaluru and surrounding areas, though the urban heat island effect could still make some densely populated regions feel hotter.

Coastal areas and the Malnad region are also expected to experience 50-60% more rainfall than average, further cooling these parts of the state. This increase in rainfall will help balance out the otherwise rising temperatures.

Heatwave Threat in Northern Karnataka

In contrast, the northeastern districts of Karnataka are likely to face extreme heat conditions. The IMD has warned that temperatures may rise as high as 43 to 45 degrees Celsius in March.

To help residents cope with the intense heat, the state's health and family welfare department has issued guidelines. People are advised to:
- Stay well-hydrated throughout the day.
- Wear full-sleeved clothing to protect themselves from the sun.
- Limit outdoor activities during the peak afternoon hours to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Warmer Nights Expected in Bengaluru

While Bengaluru's daytime temperatures may stay within normal ranges, nighttime conditions are expected to become warmer than usual. IMD senior scientist C S Patil mentioned that night temperatures could rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius above normal levels. As a result, evenings and early mornings may feel unusually warm.

La Nina's Influence on Weather Changes

The changing weather patterns in Karnataka are linked to the weakening of La Nina conditions. Normally, La Nina brings cooler temperatures to the region, but as it fades, warmer weather is likely to take hold.

Preparing for Changing Weather

As Karnataka faces this mix of heavy rainfall and heatwave conditions, residents are encouraged to take precautions. While those in the north should follow heat safety measures, Bengaluru and southern Karnataka residents should be prepared for warm nights despite increased rainfall.

With the IMD's forecasts in mind, staying informed and adjusting daily routines can help residents stay safe and comfortable during the upcoming weather changes.
