Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is planning to introduce four-coach and six-coach trains on busy routes to reduce overcrowding. This decision comes after many requests from daily commuters who say the current three-coach trains are too small to handle the increasing passenger numbers. At present, all 56 Metro trains running

across Hyderabad's three lines have only three coaches each, which often leads to congestion during rush hours.
Addition of More Coaches
Officials said they plan to add 40 to 60 new coaches after carefully studying passenger traffic, train frequency, and operational needs. However, these new coaches will not simply be attached to the existing trains. Instead, HMRL will create new train configurations, possibly a mix of three-, four-, and six-coach trains, depending on the route and passenger demand.
Purchase of Metro Coaches
Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmad said the new coaches will likely be purchased from one of the three major Metro coach manufacturers in India: Alstom, BEML Limited, or Titagarh Rail Systems. Once the new trains are added, HMRL hopes to reduce the waiting time between trains to just two minutes, improving travel convenience for commuters.
However, it may take at least two years for the new coaches to arrive, as the discussions are still in the early stages. The plan will be pursued more actively after Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which currently owns about 90% of the project, officially transfers control of the Metro to the Telangana government within a year.
Commuters Opinions Regarding the New Move
Regular passengers have welcomed the move. Many say it will help ease overcrowding, especially during peak hours. Some, like women commuters, have also requested that more coaches be reserved for female passengers to make travel safer and more comfortable. The expansion is seen as a timely and much-needed upgrade for Hyderabad's growing Metro network.
