In a major step to improve safety and comfort for women using the metro, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has added 20 transgender individuals to its security team. This decision reflects the metro's efforts to create a more secure and inclusive environment for all passengers. Metro officials said that around

30% of daily metro travellers are women, and having a more diverse security staff can help make them feel safer, both at stations and inside trains. The newly recruited transgender security personnel have completed full training in security procedures before being assigned their duties.
Posting of Members in Distinct Stations
These team members will now be posted at selected metro stations as well as inside trains. Their responsibilities include ensuring the safety of women commuters, helping passengers with information or directions, watching over baggage scanner operations, and maintaining security at areas like concourses and station entrances. They will also support the overall security team by being visibly present and approachable to passengers.
Why is this Initiative Taken?
According to HMRL, this initiative is part of its larger goal to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities within the metro system. Officials said that involving transgender persons in public-facing roles not only supports empowerment but also helps create a more respectful and welcoming atmosphere for passengers.
HMRL believes that this step will contribute to a safer travel experience and encourage more women to use metro services confidently. The metro corporation also hopes that this move will inspire other public transport systems to adopt similar inclusive practices. By strengthening both safety and representation, HMRL aims to make the metro a space where everyone feels protected, respected, and comfortable.
