Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) is making a big change in public transportation by adding 297 electric buses to its fleet. This step will not only improve travel for passengers but also make transportation cleaner and more sustainable. Announced last Thursday, this decision is a major move towards eco-friendly travel in the state. With better services and lower pollution, these buses will help both residents and tourists enjoy a more comfortable journey.

A Step Towards Green Transportation
The new fleet includes 297 electric buses, out of which 24 will be super luxury buses. These will provide better connectivity to tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The decision to introduce these buses was taken by the Board of Directors (BOD) in their latest meeting. The cost of a regular electric bus has increased from Rs 1.25 crore to Rs 1.71 crore, making this a costly but beneficial investment for the long run. The new buses are expected to reduce maintenance costs and help in building a cleaner environment.
Financial Support for the Project
To cover the cost of purchasing these buses, the state government will seek financial help from NABARD. The super luxury buses, which will provide a high-end travel experience, will be purchased at Rs 1.52 crore each. All these vehicles will follow BS-6 emission standards, which will help reduce pollution and make public transport more eco-friendly.
Maintenance and Repair Plan
One of the key agreements in this project is that the company supplying the buses will handle their maintenance and repair for the next 12 years. This will reduce the financial burden on the transport department and help in keeping the buses in top condition. Though the cost of buying these buses is high, this maintenance plan will help in saving money in the long run.
Boost for Tourism in Himachal Pradesh
The introduction of these new buses is not just about improving public transport; it is also expected to boost tourism. The super luxury buses will provide comfortable and reliable transport to major tourist destinations, making travel easier for visitors. Himachal Pradesh depends a lot on tourism, and improving transportation facilities will make the state even more attractive to travelers.
The final approval for this project is expected to be given at the state cabinet meeting on Saturday. If approved, these buses will soon start operating, offering a better travel experience to passengers. This project marks a significant step towards modernizing public transport in Himachal Pradesh while keeping environmental concerns in mind.
The plan to introduce 297 electric buses, including 24 super luxury buses, is a major development in Himachal Pradesh's transport system. By choosing clean energy and improving travel facilities, the HRTC is taking a strong step towards a better future. This project will benefit both local passengers and tourists, making travel in the state more comfortable, efficient, and environmentally friendly.
