Heavy Rainfall In Assam Causes Major Floods, Claims Lives

Assam is grappling with severe flooding, affecting nearly 24 lakh people and claiming 52 lives. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have overflowed, while weather warnings across India call for urgent preparedness.

Heavy flooding has caused severe damage in Assam, with relentless rainfall affecting nearly 24 lakh people. Major rivers like the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are overflowing, crossing their danger marks.

Since last week, Assam has faced extreme flooding, leading to the loss of 52 lives due to flood-related incidents this year. In Guwahati, a landslide caused by heavy rain claimed one life on Friday, while an eight-year-old child went missing after falling into a flooded city sewer.

Flood Situation in Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned on Friday that the flood situation is improving. "The flood situation has improved and water has receded, but it continues at the places where there has been a breach of the embedment. The power supply has been cut for the safety of the people. The power can be restored in 2 minutes but the power has been cut off as there is water everywhere," he told ANI.

Meanwhile, other states in India are also experiencing chaos due to heavy rainfall. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, and Manipur have all been affected. In Himachal Pradesh alone, 64 roads have been closed because of continuous rain.

Weather Warnings Across India

The regional Meteorological office in North India has issued warnings about potential moderate flash floods in parts of Kangra, Kullu, Kinnaur, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla districts within the next 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert in Karnataka. This alert led to the closure of Anganwadis, schools, and pre-university colleges in Dakshina Kannada district on July 6 due to heavy rainfall. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for fishing activities.

The heavy rains have also triggered dangerous landslides in states like Nagaland and Uttarakhand. According to the latest forecast by IMD, isolated heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is expected in western Uttar Pradesh on July 6. There are also chances of very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.5 mm to 204.4 mm.

This ongoing weather crisis highlights the urgent need for preparedness and effective response mechanisms across affected regions to mitigate further damage and ensure public safety.
