Heavy Rain Lashes Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, IMD Warns of More to Come

Summer showers turned dramatic for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad as both cities witnessed record-breaking rainfall on May 20. Pimpri Chinchwad received an unexpected 101 mm of rain in a single day, marking it as a day of extremely heavy rainfall. Pune city too recorded 40 mm of rain, adding to the changing weather conditions across the region.

Heavy Rain Lashes Pune

Heavy rainfall sets new record

Pimpri Chinchwad was the most affected area with 101 mm of rain-the highest rainfall in the region so far this season. Pune followed closely behind with 40 mm. Several other places across the district also recorded significant rainfall, showing the seriousness of the weather event.

Evening showers surprise residents

Wednesday, May 22, also brought more rain. While the day started with light drizzles in a few parts of the city, the evening saw thunder, lightning, and another round of heavy showers. Areas like Baner and Pashan were hit hard, with strong rains returning at night and adding to the already wet conditions.

The rainfall was spread out across the district and impacted many areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the rainfall numbers, with Pimpri Chinchwad leading the chart.

Orange alert for more rain

Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of Pune's IMD office, warned that the weather could get worse. He mentioned an orange alert for very heavy rain between May 21 and May 23 in Pune and nearby districts. This warning is due to a low-pressure area developing along the North Karnataka-Goa coast. The system is likely to become stronger and bring more rain.

Other parts of Maharashtra also affected

The weather forecast suggests that it is not just Pune facing heavy rainfall. The Konkan region, including Mumbai, and other places like Nashik, are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain. While some areas in Marathwada may get a short break from the rain, the overall prediction is for more rainfall across the state.

Monsoon reaches India's doorstep

Along with this rain, the monsoon has now reached India's doorstep. By May 21, it had crossed Sri Lanka and the Maldives. It is expected to enter Kerala around May 25, officially starting the monsoon season. Western coastal states such as Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala are likely to see widespread heavy rainfall in the next few days.

This sudden and strong wave of rain over Pune and its surrounding areas shows the changing face of the season. With the monsoon almost here, people are preparing for more wet days ahead-hoping for good rains without too much trouble.
