Ahmedabad Metro will soon introduce driverless trains as part of efforts to improve urban public transport in Gujarat. The state government has ordered 34 new advanced metro train sets to increase the frequency and reduce waiting times for commuters. Out of the total order, 10 train sets will be used

for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-II project, while the remaining 24 will be deployed for the upcoming Surat Metro network. These modern trains are currently being manufactured at a facility run by Titagarh Rail Systems in Kolkata.
How are these Driverless Trains Different from Regular Metro Trains?
The new trains will use advanced driverless technology designed to improve punctuality and energy efficiency. They will also include several modern safety and monitoring features. These include real-time monitoring systems, automated braking, CCTV surveillance, fire detection technology, and fail-safe door operations. With these features, passengers are expected to enjoy a safer, smoother, and more comfortable metro journey.
How will it develop Gujarat's Public Transportation?
Officials believe that the project will also strengthen Gujarat's public transport infrastructure and support domestic manufacturing. The initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities and encourage skill development in the country. With the local production, the project will also help reduce the need for imports and lower the outflow of foreign exchange.
At present, the Ahmedabad Metro network covers around 68.2 km. A total of 32 train sets are already operating on the corridor connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. However, the 10 additional train sets will help increase service frequency and make metro travel more convenient for commuters.
Meanwhile, construction work on the 40.3 km Surat Metro network is progressing quickly. Once the entire system is operational, it is expected to improve daily travel in Surat by reducing traffic congestion and providing a reliable and environmentally friendly transport option for the city's growing population.
