India Celebrates Dhorra Mafi Village: From Asia's Most Literate to an Ambitious Smart Village

Village

Dhorra Mafi village, located in the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh, has achieved a significant milestone by being recognized as not only the most literate village in India but also in all of Asia. With an impressive literacy rate surpassing 80%, the village has been acknowledged in the prestigious "Limca Book of World Records" and was even proposed for inclusion in the renowned "Guinness World Records." This remarkable achievement has filled the village with pride. However, the residents aspire for more, hoping to attain the status of a "smart village" as recognized by the administration.

Formerly an independent village, Dhorra Mafi is now a part of the Aligarh district following the merger process initiated in 2018. Situated near Aligarh Muslim University, the village is home to a population of approximately 18,000 to 20,000 people. Despite its rural location, Dhorra Mafi has defied stereotypes with its remarkable development. The village boasts round-the-clock electricity and water supply, English-medium schools, colleges, hospitals, and banks. This exceptional progress has earned the village a reputation as one of the most advanced and well-equipped communities in the country.

Dhorra Mafi Village has garnered attention not only for its outstanding educational focus but also for its harmonious coexistence of Muslim and non-Muslim residents. The village gained nationwide recognition when Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan posed the question, "Which is the most educated village in Asia?" during his popular quiz program, "Kaun Banega Crorepati." In 2002, Dhorra Mafi secured its place in the Limca Book of World Records as India's most literate village.

The village has produced numerous accomplished individuals, including scientists, doctors, engineers, professors, and IAS officers. Many residents have secured government jobs, and some have even settled abroad, showcasing the village's caliber and excellence. The close proximity to Aligarh Muslim University has played a pivotal role in providing quality education to both men and women. Dhorra Mafi proudly claims distinguished personalities such as Faiz Mustafa, a former Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, as well as Dr. Shadab Bano, Dr. Naima Gurrej, and Dr. Siraj, an IAS officer.

M Noorul Amin, the former Gram Pradhan of Dhorra Mafi, expressed his immense pride in the village's exceptional literacy achievements. However, he also voiced his disappointment that their plea to transform the village into a model smart village was overlooked by the district and state administration.

While Dhorra Mafi has gained fame as Asia's most literate village, it is not the only village in India setting noteworthy examples. Other villages, like a small village in Meghalaya earning the title of "Asia's cleanest village," stand alongside Dhorra Mafi, demonstrating India's potential and commitment to progress.

Despite becoming a part of the Aligarh district, the residents of Dhorra Mafi continue to strive for recognition as a smart village, displaying their unwavering determination to pursue excellence and innovation in their community.
