Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has started a detailed survey at 28 locations across Goa to study the possibility of setting up a mass water transport system in the state. This survey will help identify potential routes and estimate how many passengers might use a future water taxi network connecting

different parts of Goa.
KMRL to Conduct a Study
According to Vikramsinh Rajebhosale, Director of the River Navigation Department (RND), the study is being carried out by KMRL and Systra Consultancy, led by Glisten Verghese, Yogesh R., and Prajakta Pande. The Government of India has appointed KMRL as the nodal agency for this project. After completing the study, KMRL will submit its report to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Goa government.
Water Metro Idea in Goa
The idea of a water metro in Goa was first discussed in August, when the state government showed interest in launching water metro taxis similar to those operating successfully in Kerala. Goa's River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai visited Kerala and held discussions with KMRL officials to understand the system's operations and benefits.
Goa has over 90 kilometres of navigable inland waterways and many islands separated from the mainland. The proposed water transport system could make travel between these places easier and reduce road congestion. Phal Dessai said that the government plans to review the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and other consultation documents prepared by KMRL to guide the project's implementation.
Once the study is completed, the findings will help decide whether the water metro project is practical and how it can be developed to suit Goa's geography and travel needs. If successful, this initiative could offer residents and tourists a faster, eco-friendly, and scenic travel option across the state's waterways.
