Gurugram Metro Rail Limited Takes Over Operations of Rapid Metro from DMRC Amid Transition Plans

Since Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) is the special purpose company of Haryana Mass Rapid Transportation Corporation, it will take over the operation and maintenance of Gurugram's Rapid Metro from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Although the process has started, no fixed timeline has been set yet. According to

officials, this decision was made after GMRL recently brought in key staff members, making it capable of handling operations by itself.

Gurugram's Rapid Metro Routes

The Rapid Metro is a 12.85 km-long line running from Cyber Hub to Sector 56 along Golf Course Road, with 11 stations, connecting the Delhi Metro's Yellow Line at Sikanderpur and allowing commuters easier access to both networks. Major stations include DLF Phase 3, Cyber Hub, Belvedere Tower, Moulsree Avenue, Sikanderpur, and several sector stations up to Sector 55-56.

GMRL to Take Charge of Gurugram's Rapid Metro

GMRL has formed three committees to address aspects of the process for ensuring a smooth transfer from DMRC. The first committee will review technical issues, approvals, breakdown readiness, and vendor support. The second will check asset transfer, infrastructure condition, and legal matters. The third will handle fare structure, non-fare revenue, and contract management. These committees submitted their plans in July, and a "parallel working" arrangement will be in place to make a seamless handover.

The Rapid Metro was originally developed by Rapid Metro Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) under a public-private partnership. Since October 2019, DMRC has been operating the line on behalf of HMRTC, as RMGL withdrew due to financial and operational challenges. HMRTC reported the operating expenses for the Rapid Metro increased up to ₹58.68 crore in 2024-25, compared to ₹50.87 crore in 2023-24. Passenger numbers have also been strong, with the highest ridership recorded at 1.55 million in September 2024.
