Tighten your seat belts adventure enthusiasts, Mega-adventure tourism trails will soon be available in India, catering to thrill-seekers and adventure aficionados. More than 100 adventure tourism locations and circuits are planned to be developed around India as part of the Ministry of Tourism's "Dekho Apna Desh" initiative. According to sources, the Ministry of Tourism recently announced that the Ganga Trail & the Northwestern Himalayan Trail will be India's two major adventure trails in 2023.

These mega tourism trails will be in the Ganges and Himalayan regions. A wide range of adventure sports, such as mountaineering, kayaking, skiing, trekking, rafting, and paragliding, would be available along these mega tourism trails. The promotion of the area's cultural legacy will be emphasized, along with sustainable tourism development that emphasizes the preservation of natural resources.
A few of the adventure routes that are now being established include:
- The Narmada Trail (Amarant to the Arabian Sea)
- The Kaveri Trail
- The West Coast Train (Kutch to Kanyakumari), and
- The East Coast Trail (West Bengal to Kanyakumari)
However, efforts will be made to initially develop the two mentioned trails for the time being. In addition to promoting adventure travel, the project will also open up job opportunities and advance local tourism. The local population will receive training in a variety of adventure tourism-related topics, such as safety, equipment management, and hospitality.
The initiative is also anticipated to draw foreign visitors and position India as a key destination for adventure tourism worldwide. For the next few years, the government would invest 800 crores of Indian rupees in the growth of the adventure tourism sector.
On Sunday, 2nd April, while speaking at a session of the G-20 tourism working group's meeting in Siliguri, West Bengal, Tourism Minister Kishan Reddy presented these ideas.

According to the minister, India's topography makes it a prime location for eco-friendly adventure travel. He went on to say that the country's 7,000 km of coastline, 70% of the Himalayas, about 700 km of rivers, and Ladakh's desert and cold desert provided plenty of opportunity for a range of adventure activities both for domestic and foreign visitors.
According to reports, all of these adventure tourism activities will be created with consideration for sustainability and the part they will play in providing chances for livelihood for the communities living in these areas.
For instance, any tourism endeavour in the Himalayan region must benefit the local and indigenous populations who live in the hilly areas of Sikkim, Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh. Any tourism-related activities at scuba diving locations should be carried out with consideration for the well-being of the marine ecosystem.
