Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston: Honoring Mahatma Gandhi's Message of Peace
In a world often filled with problems and fights, there's a bright spot, a place that remembers Mahatma Gandhi, a world-famous peacemaker. It's the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston (EGMH), located in Texas, USA. This unique museum just opened, and it's the first of its kind in North America, dedicated to the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in nonviolence.

The EGMH welcomed its first visitors on August 15, 2023. However, the grand inauguration ceremony took place on October 2, 2023, by his grandson, Shri Rajmohan Gandhi, on the occasion of the 154th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
This special museum is located in Houston, Texas, and it's the only museum in the United States dedicated entirely to Gandhi. The museum's building itself is designed to look like Gandhi's spinning wheel, which he used as a symbol while working to free India from British rule.
This museum is 13,000 square feet big and takes you on a journey through Gandhi's life. It has three parts:
Gallery One - His Journey: This part of the museum shows how young Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi grew from a scared boy into the great Mahatma we know today. It's a powerful story of his amazing change.
Gallery Two - Our Journey: In this part, you learn how Gandhi's ideas about peace and not fighting inspired leaders all over the world. People like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Lech Walesa, Nelson Mandela, Betty Williams, Mairead Corrigan, and more followed Gandhi's path, working for peace and fairness.
Gallery Three - My Journey: After hearing about Gandhi and other peace leaders, this part is for you to think about your own part in making the world better and more peaceful.

EGMH also wants to be a place for learning and culture. It wants to teach students from grades six to twelve through special tours. The goal is to inspire the next generation of leaders to work for peace and fairness. Atul Kothari, a trustee and co-founder of the museum, hopes it can be a place where people from all different backgrounds can come together and learn about how being nonviolent can change the world.
The museum is full of interactive and interesting things that tell the story of Gandhi's life. A company called Solid Light made these displays. The museum is also available in English, Spanish, and Hindi, so many people can visit and understand it.
One exciting thing in the museum is a little theater called "A Force More Powerful." About 20 people can sit there and watch a short film about Gandhi. It's a chance to learn more about what he believed and what he did.
The museum also has a big hall called an auditorium. It can fit up to 108 people and is perfect for events like birthdays, anniversaries, meetings, shows, and more.
Important people and relatives of Mahatma Gandhi and other peace leaders were there when the museum opened. Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, said the museum would help people be kinder and stop fighting. Isaac Newton Farris Jr., who is related to Martin Luther King Jr., said the museum and Gandhi's ideas are just what America needs right now.

US Representative Al Green helped get $3 million to make the museum. He says Gandhi's ideas are still important today, and the museum can help us stop fighting and hating each other.
The museum also talks about other people who made the world better without using violence. Some of them are Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg, American workers' leader Cesar Chavez, Native American activist Wilma Mankiller, and Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai.
The EGMH is like a symbol of hope and peace. It welcomes everyone to learn about Mahatma Gandhi's message - a message that doesn't get old, no matter where you're from or what's happening in the world.
