The Karnataka government's move to go ahead with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Bengaluru-Tumakuru Metro line has raised serious concerns. Many experts believe this project is unnecessary, impractical, and goes against basic transport planning principles. Preparing a DPR despite doubts about its usefulness is seen as

a waste of public money on a project that should not have been considered.
Metro Under Public-Private Partnership
Home Minister G. Parameshwara, who represents Tumakuru, said that a company from Qatar is ready to fully fund the metro line under a public-private partnership (PPP). But just because money is available does not mean it should be spent on a project that does not make sense. A poorly planned project remains wasteful even if funded by foreign investors.
The state has many pressing transport issues that need attention, and building a metro between two cities is not one of them. Metro systems are designed for efficient movement within a city, featuring closely spaced stations, rapid acceleration, and frequent service. Extending a metro for nearly 70 km between two separate cities defeats its purpose.
BMRCL's Suggested Metro Stations
BMRCL has suggested stations 1-2 km apart between Madavara and Nelamangala, and 4-5 km apart between Nelamangala and Tumakuru. This irregular spacing does not meet the needs of either city travel or inter-city travel.
The biggest problem with the proposal is that it repeats work that is already underway. South Western Railway is spending Rs 3,500 crore to upgrade and quadruple the Bengaluru-Tumakuru rail line, which is far cheaper than a metro. K-RIDE has also planned a suburban rail line to Tumakuru. Building a metro alongside an upgraded rail line is an unnecessary expense.
Is Tumakuru Metro a Real Transport Solution?
What Tumakuru actually needs is a well-planned transport hub near Bengaluru's north-west side, where people arriving by suburban or mainline trains can easily switch to metro or BMTC buses. Trains can then continue to important stations like Yeshwanthpur or KSR Bengaluru. The Tumakuru Metro is not a real transport solution. It appears to be a politically motivated, expensive, and technically weak idea. The government should stop work on the DPR and focus on projects that truly benefit the public.
