European Travel Costs Rise: Schengen Visa Fees to Go Up from June 2024

In a recent decision, the European Commission has announced an increase in the fees for short stay Schengen visas (visa type C) by 12 percent. This change will take effect globally starting from 11 June 2024. Slovenia's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs shared this information in a statement.

Schengen Visa Fees to Go Up from June

From this date, the new fees for Schengen visas will be 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children aged 6 to below 12 years. This hike will impact all visa applicants around the world.

The Schengen visa allows travel across 27 European countries, including popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. These countries are increasingly becoming top choices for Indian travelers looking to explore Europe.

Rising Popularity of European Vacations Among Indians

European vacations have become very popular among Indian travelers. According to a recent report by the European Commission, there has been a significant rise in Schengen visa applications from Indian nationals. In 2023, the number of applications from India saw a remarkable 43 percent increase compared to 2022. With a total of 966,687 applications in 2023, India ranked third in the world for Schengen visa applications.

Reasons for the Fee Increase

The last time the visa fees were updated was in February 2020. At that time, the fee for adult visas was increased from 60 euros to 80 euros. The European Commission explained that the latest hike is due to inflation and the need to cover administrative costs. These costs include background checks, data processing, and maintaining secure entry systems.

Challenges Faced by Indian Travelers

As the summer holiday season begins, many Indian travelers are finding it difficult to get Schengen visas due to the high demand for travel to Europe in 2024. Reports suggest that getting an appointment for a visa interview in countries like Germany or Italy is now only possible in July 2024. This surge in demand reflects a 44 percent increase in visa applications for Schengen countries, including those from India.

In 2023, the number of Schengen visa applications from India rose from 6.7 lakh in 2022 to 9.7 lakh. This makes India the second-highest in the world in terms of the percentage increase in visa applications, just behind China. Despite this high demand, many Indian travelers are facing disruptions in their travel plans due to the lack of available visa interview slots.

Impact on Travel Plans

Anil Kalsi, Vice President of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), expressed concern about the situation. He said, "Appointments for Schengen visa interviews are simply unavailable with the majority of Schengen countries. If you plan to travel to Europe this summer, the earliest appointment date for Germany and Italy is in July. This is making life very difficult for travelers."

Experts believe that the actual demand from India might be even higher than reported, indicating a greater need for visas than the official numbers show. However, the shortage of visa interview slots continues to cause problems for many Indian travelers. Kalsi emphasized how this shortage is forcing travelers to either settle for available slots in other destinations or cancel their plans to visit Europe altogether.

Comparison with Other Countries

The increase in visa applications from India presents a different story compared to countries like Russia and China. While demand from China skyrocketed to the top spot in 2022, with a 1,104 percent rise compared to the previous year, Russia's situation is different. Russia moved from rank 2 in 2022 to rank 5 in 2023. This change is largely due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, which has caused a 25 percent decline in Schengen visa applications from Russia over the past two years.

The European Commission's decision to increase Schengen visa fees will impact travelers worldwide starting 11 June 2024. With the new fees set at 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children, Indian travelers, among others, will need to adjust their travel plans accordingly. The rising popularity of European destinations among Indians, coupled with the increased demand for visas, highlights the growing interest in exploring Europe. However, the challenges in securing visa interview appointments remain a significant hurdle for many aspiring travelers.
