The revised speed limit for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) is now 60 km/hr while Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) can ply at a speed of 50 km/hr. Two-wheelers also have a reason to rejoice as their speed limit has been raised to 50 km/hr, and autorickshaws can travel fast up to 40 km/hr. Implementation and Monitoring of New Speed Limits

These changes came after extensive research and consultation. A six-member committee consisting of senior police officials, professors from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, and representatives from the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), Faridabad, formulated the recommendations. Compared to the previous limits of 25 km/hr for autorickshaws, 35 km/hr for HMVs, 40 km/hr for LMVs, and two-wheelers from 7 am to 10 pm, the revised speed limits mark a significant increase. A similar increase is also noted for night-time speed limits. It's crucial, however, to bear in mind that exceeding these limits could be punishable under section 183 of the Motor Vehicle Act. Fines for violations can be 1,000 for LMVs and autorickshaws and 2,000 for HMVs and any other vehicle type.
