Digi Yatra's International Feature Set to Soar: From Check-Ins to Easy Public Access, Find Details

Digi Yatra, a pioneering initiative set to revolutionize travel, is on the brink of a significant expansion. The project aims to extend its services to international travelers by the end of 2025, marking a new chapter in seamless travel experiences. But there's more to the transformation than meets the eye; the ambitious makeover encompasses integrating the app for hotel check-ins and facilitating hassle-free access to public places.

Digi Yatra s International Feature

Under the stewardship of the Digi Yatra Foundation (DYF), a non-profit organization spearheading the project, plans are underway to create e-passport verifiable credentials by integrating chip-enabled e-passports into the app. Currently, in the prototype testing phase for e-passport-based enrollment, DYF is eagerly awaiting the rollout of electronic passports in India to expedite the process.

In tandem with these efforts, DYF is in talks with various stakeholders to introduce automated border control practices for immigration during departure and arrival. The objective is to streamline immigration clearances by automating the process upon arrival and departure, thereby eliminating the need for physical passport verification and saving travelers precious time.

Moreover, DYF is poised to align with IATA One-ID, a global initiative by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) aimed at enhancing passenger journeys through advanced information sharing and contactless processes at airports based on biometric-enabled identification.

The trend towards digital travel isn't confined to India alone; several European countries are also exploring similar concepts. Finland led the way by launching the world's first digital travel document pilot program at Helsinki Airport last year, while countries like Croatia, the Netherlands, and Canada are following suit.

The recent upgrade in the backend system of the biometric boarding system, which utilizes facial recognition technology for verification at Indian airports, signals preparations for expanding services to 13 additional airports. This upgrade is part of the groundwork for extending Digi Yatra benefits to foreign travel by 2025, alongside features like seamless hotel check-ins, access to public places, and a chatbot.

DYF's vision extends beyond mere facilitation of travel; it aspires to position India as a global transit hub. Initiatives like the international feature of Digi Yatra contribute to this grand vision by streamlining passenger processes and enhancing the overall travel experience.

Furthermore, DYF is developing a decentralized mobile-based ID storage platform to securely store IDs and travel documents, ensuring enhanced data security and privacy. This platform will also facilitate safer hotel check-ins by enabling validation through facial recognition.

Looking ahead, DYF plans to introduce a chatbot for text, voice, and video support by September this year, providing travelers with comprehensive assistance. Additionally, a guardianship feature will be implemented to enable parents to enroll their children through the app. The team also aims to incorporate features for public place entry, such as stadiums, by next year.

In a move towards advanced data security, DYF is exploring fully homomorphic encryption technology, allowing the unlocking of data on untrusted domains without decryption. Addressing concerns about data security, DYF emphasizes that Digi Yatra does not centrally store passenger information and employs robust protocols to safeguard privacy and data protection.
