Digi Yatra, a program aimed at making airport travel smoother through Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), is gaining momentum in India. Launched in December 2022 by the Digi Yatra Foundation, this initiative allows passengers to move easily through airport checkpoints without needing to show their boarding passes or IDs repeatedly.

Instead, their faces act as their identification. The foundation's CEO, Suresh Khadakbhavi, announced exciting plans to expand the program to international passengers, with a pilot project to connect two countries by June next year. This expansion is expected to revolutionize the airport experience for international travelers, making journeys quicker and stress-free.
Expanding to More Airports
Currently, Digi Yatra is available at 24 airports across India, with plans to introduce it to 4-5 more airports soon. This technology offers a seamless experience for passengers, allowing them to move through security checkpoints without hassle. The service is not just about convenience; it is also part of a larger effort to integrate advanced technology into the airport environment.
Accessibility in Multiple Languages
Digi Yatra's team is working on making the program accessible in several regional and international languages. This will ensure that passengers from different parts of the world can use the service without any language barriers. By doing this, Digi Yatra hopes to make the travel experience inclusive for everyone, whether they are traveling domestically or internationally. This expansion reflects a focus on making the airport experience easy for all, regardless of the language spoken.
Addressing Privacy Concerns
With the growth of facial recognition technology comes concerns about privacy and data security. To address these concerns, the Digi Yatra Foundation is planning to launch a campaign to educate travelers about the service and how their personal information will be protected. CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi emphasized the importance of building trust with passengers, ensuring them that their data will be safeguarded. This approach aims to ease any worries travelers may have about sharing their personal information while using the service.
A Bright Future for Air Travel
The Digi Yatra initiative is setting a new standard for air travel in India and beyond. With its rapid expansion, the program is helping make airport experiences smoother, quicker, and more convenient for passengers. The upcoming pilot project, which will link two countries, marks a major milestone in the program's growth. As more airports adopt this technology, and as it becomes accessible in multiple languages, Digi Yatra is poised to lead the way in making air travel easier and more efficient for everyone.
