India's capital city, Delhi, is taking a significant step towards sustainable mobility by adding 500 more electric buses to its public transportation fleet. This massive induction, set to take place at IP Depot, will be the largest one-time addition in recent history. The initiative is part of the Central government's FAME II scheme to promote electric mobility in the country. With this, Delhi is set to become the city with the highest number of electric buses in India.

Impressive Track Record of Electric Buses in Delhi
Since January 2022, 800 electric buses have been serving Delhi commuters, covering a whopping distance of 42 million kilometres. These eco-friendly vehicles have significantly contributed to reducing carbon emissions, cutting more than 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide so far. The addition of the new electric vehicles will take the total number of electric buses in the fleet to 1,300.

Delhi’s Future Plans for Green Transportation
By 2025, Delhi plans to have a total of 10,480 buses, with electric vehicles making up 80 per cent of the fleet. This increase in electric buses will help cut an estimated 4.67 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The new buses are designed with a focus on accessibility and safety. They are disabled-friendly, air-conditioned, emit zero smoke and noise, and come equipped with GPS, CCTVs, and panic buttons. Provisions for live video streaming during emergencies and fire detection and suppression systems further ensure passenger safety. The buses will also be monitored by the Central Command Control room, providing an additional layer of security.

Delhi's move to add 500 more electric buses to its fleet is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainable transit. As these buses ply on Delhi's roads, they not only provide a cleaner and safer mode of transport but also set an example for other cities in India and around the world. This sustainable leap forward is what cities around the globe need to emulate to ensure a clean, green, and sustainable future for all.
