Delhi is set to introduce water taxis on a 4km stretch of the Yamuna River, offering a new and eco-friendly travel experience. This exciting initiative aims to improve tourism in the capital while promoting sustainable transport. The project is a result of a partnership between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the Delhi government, and other key agencies.
Eco-Friendly Water Taxis for Safe and Comfortable Travel
The new water taxis will run between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, located upstream of Wazirabad. These boats will be powered by solar energy and designed as hybrid vessels, reducing their environmental impact. Each boat will have the capacity to carry 20 to 30 passengers.
To ensure passenger safety and comfort, the water taxis will be equipped with important features such as:
- Bio-toilets for hygiene
- Public announcement systems for clear communication
- Life jackets for all passengers

Key Partnerships and Infrastructure Development
To successfully launch the water taxi service, several important agencies are involved in the project. Apart from the IWAI and the Delhi government, the collaboration includes the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Delhi Jal Board, and the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will soon be signed to officially mark the partnership. This agreement reflects a strong commitment to developing water-based transport in Delhi while supporting recreational activities.
Additionally, the IWAI plans to install two High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) jetties to ensure smooth ferry operations. These jetties will provide safe and easy access for passengers, improving the overall travel experience.

Changes from the Original Plan
The idea of introducing water taxis in Delhi first emerged in 2018 when the Centre announced plans for a 16km water taxi service from Wazirabad to Fatehpur Jat. However, environmental concerns led to a revised plan.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) requested a thorough environmental review to assess the river's role as a source of drinking water. Following this review, the project was adjusted to cover a shorter 4km stretch between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur.
Careful Planning for Success
To ensure the project's success, the IWAI had previously issued a notice in September seeking interest from companies interested in operating the ferry service. This notice outlined the requirements for the electric or solar-powered hybrid boats, including their capacity, speed, and design specifications.
By taking time to address environmental concerns and technical details, the authorities have ensured that the water taxi service will be efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible.
