Delhi-NCR is facing a severe air pollution crisis, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting a shocking 457, categorizing it as "severe plus." To tackle this, authorities have activated Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This step aims to bring the pollution under control and protect residents from its harmful effects.

Strict Measures to Curb Emissions
Under GRAP Stage 4, several rules have been introduced:
- Diesel vehicles that are medium to heavy goods carriers and registered in Delhi are now banned unless they are transporting essential items.
- Light commercial vehicles from outside Delhi are prohibited unless they run on cleaner fuels like CNG or electric power or are delivering vital goods.
- Construction activities for public infrastructure projects are completely halted, extending restrictions from previous stages.
These measures target key pollution sources and aim to limit harmful emissions.
Ensuring Public Safety and Essential Services
While these restrictions are strict, authorities are ensuring that essential services remain unaffected. Trucks carrying necessary goods or running on cleaner fuels are allowed entry. Public transport and emergency services continue to operate, ensuring mobility for essential needs.
To reduce pollution caused by commuting, offices in both the private and public sectors are advised to work with only half their staff on-site, with the rest working remotely. Schools and colleges are encouraged to shift to online classes, although physical attendance in universities is permitted under government guidelines.
Air Quality Concerns
Out of 34 air monitoring stations in Delhi, 32 have reported "severe" AQI levels. The primary pollutant is PM2.5, tiny particles that can deeply affect the lungs and overall health. Major contributors to this pollution include vehicular emissions (15.8%) and stubble burning from nearby states (25%).
Advisory for Vulnerable Groups
Authorities have issued strong warnings, especially for children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions, urging them to stay indoors. This is critical, as the current air quality poses serious health risks.
Additional Measures Under Consideration
State governments have been advised to implement further steps, such as closing colleges, restricting non-essential activities, and possibly introducing odd-even vehicle schemes to reduce traffic emissions.
A Collective Fight for Cleaner Air
The activation of GRAP Stage 4 is a significant move to address Delhi-NCR's worsening air pollution. While ensuring essential services continue, these efforts focus on reducing emissions and safeguarding public health. The community's cooperation, along with government actions, will play a key role in improving the region's air quality and ensuring a healthier future for its residents.
